Social anxiety can take many different forms, and no matter what you have been told by well-meaning friends and loved ones, it is not something that you can just “get over.” If you are faced with social anxiety, things like functioning with people on a professional level as well as When it comes to treating social anxiety, there are many different approaches, but the important thing to do is to make sure that you find the one that fits completely with your life.
Depending on the severity of your social anxiety and your access to people who can help, some people find it handy to go out with a friend close to hand. Having someone else nearby can keep the person suffering from social anxiety calm, and you’ll find that a distraction is often a great way to alleviate some anxiety. Depending on the cause of your social anxiety, having someone there who you know is “on your side” can also do wonders for keeping you cool. With a friend close to hand, you can acclimatize yourself to a social situation and your friend can keep you safely grounded.
Obviously, it is not always possible to bring a friend along wherever you go, so you will need to look into other ways of treating social anxiety as well. One method of treating social anxiety is cognitive therapy. Cognitive therapy is a an excellent form of therapy for people who are unwilling or unable to look as deeply into the past as psychotherapy might demand. With cognitive therapy, the patient makes himself think in logical paths that end in correct action. This is a very results-based form of treatment, and many people have used it to successfully treat a variety of anxiety problems.
Depending on the access that you have and the level of involvement that you have with a mental health professional, you might also find that prescribed drugs will help you with your social anxiety disorder. Selective seratonin reuptake inhibitors, known as SSRIs, have been used to successfully treat social anxiety, as have antidepressants. If you are wary about going on drugs, ask for a quick list side effects before you allow them to be prescribed for you. Be proactive about your medication; if you don’t like the side effects of one treatment, ask for another.
When you are looking into treating social anxiety, there might be a long road ahead of you. Social anxiety is a very real problem, and there are many facets to it. It can affect your personal life, your professional life, even your ability to deal with your closest friends and love ones. Remember that social anxiety is treatable; the key is just finding the right treatment!
